UNC fans have plenty to do in Charlotte

Charlotte will close streets for a pep rally Friday in advance of Saturday's Meineke Car Care Bowl pitting UNC and West Virginia.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Traffic in downtown Charlotte will be rerouted for a daylong buildup to Saturday's sold-out Meineke Car Care Bowl.

Trade Street at Tryon will be closed Friday afternoon for pep rally featuring both teams.

Officials expect more pedestrian traffic than usual with thousands of visitors in Charlotte for the football game Saturday afternoon. Many of those who normally work in downtown area are off for the day after Christmas.

The bowl game at Bank of America Stadium pits North Carolina against West Virginia.

 

Friday rally welcomes fans of both teams

The RBC Bank Street Festival is from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Trade and Tryon streets, and it's open to everyone.

This event is sponsored by bowl organizers. It will feature interactive games and rides, live entertainment, appearances by players and coaches from the two teams, food and beverages, and performances by the schools' bands and cheerleaders.

You'll also have plenty of opportunities to buy a UNC or West Virginia shirt, hat, sweatshirt, jacket, or other memorabilia.

UNC events in Charlotte

Tar Heel Fan Central, Friday from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.- noon in the lobby of the Marriott City Center
Uptown Pep Rally, Friday from 5-6 p.m. at Trade and Tryon streets. The rally will be hosted by Jones Angell and will feature the Tar Heel marching band and cheerleaders.

Tar Heel Meineke Bowl Preview Show, Friday at 7 p.m. at Champs Sports Bar in the Marriott City Center. Woody Durham hosts radio talk show, broadcast on stations across the state

Old Well Walk, Saturday at 10:15 a.m.The Tar Heel band, the cheerleaders and   Rameses will cheer the team as it departs the Marriott City Center hotel for Bank of America Stadium.
