CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Department of Public Safety is warning students about an armed robbery that happened late Thursday near campus.

A student reported to campus police that he was walking along South Columbia Street near N.C. Highway 54 around 11 p.m. when three men in a gray, late-model Dodge Charger with red lettering stopped him for directions.

When the student approached the car, he said, a man in the back seat pulled a handgun and hit him with it. The three then stole the student's cellphone and wallet before driving away from campus.

Police did not provide a detailed description of the men, but are asking that anyone with information that could help identify them to call 911 or contact the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515.
