CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of North Carolina System Board of Governors met Friday for a regular meeting under new leadership.
Last week, after a series of public protests, the board named Margaret Spellings to be the new system president. After Spellings' selection, board chairman John Fennebresque resigned.
His short stint as chairman was marred with strained relations and stinging criticism from UNC faculty, students and even members of the state legislature.
In January, Fennebresque announced the surprise ouster of System President Tom Ross. His reason was never quite clear.
Faculty, students and fellow board members then complained they'd been shut out of the process that identified Spellings as Ross' replacement.
Interim Chairman Lou Bissette Jr. led Friday's meeting.
