WAKE FOREST, N.C. — Tetiana Garkun, a principal in Ukraine, has been in the U.S. since April 23.

She has been visiting various Christian schools in the country, including schools in North Carolina. Garkun had been staying in Wake Forest until Wednesday when she headed back to Ukraine.

Garkun is returning to Ukraine because she wants to continue to teach and help students in her school and community. She caught her flight on Wednesday out of RDU to Germany and then took a 30-hour bus ride to Ukraine.

"I’m very grateful for the American people," she said. "Everywhere I visited people they were all very worried and said they are praying for Ukraine and it brought tears to my eyes."

Garkun’s trip was planned before the war started in Ukraine. Her mission was to share ideas from Christian schools in the U.S.

Garkun said she was invited by Raleigh Christian Academy to visit and find out more about the Christian faith and way of life. She also visited Florida and South Dakota.

"I’m a Christian educator and I was very interested in getting to know more about American Christian schools."

She's cherished her time in the U.S., but understandably misses home.

She said she enjoyed North Carolina, adding it was "very beautiful and very green."
