Northbound lanes of U.S. 1 in Youngsville were closed Thursday after a tractor-trailer spilled some kind of chemical.

— Law enforcement officers were directing traffic away from the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 1 at N.C. Highway 96 in Youngsville Thursday afternoon while hazardous materials crews worked to clear what appeared to be a chemical spill from a tractor-trailer.

According to Franklin County police, a box truck spilled a corrosive chemical known at ferric chloride when it turned onto N.C. Highway 96.

Businesses in a nearby shopping center, which includes a fitness center, a McDonald's and a Food Lion, were asked to evacuate, a dentist with an office there said.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation posted a traffic alert warning drivers that lanes would be reduced through the intersection until Friday morning.
