RALEIGH, N.C. — The American Red Cross announced Monday that there is an urgent need of blood types O positive and O negative.

American Red Cross officials said the current supply of those types is at a half-day supply.

Red Cross officials said they have seen some improvement in the blood supply since making its appeal for blood donors more than two weeks ago.

"The public is responding to the call for blood donors," said Robert F. Fechner, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Region. "The supply of type B blood has improved to almost a two-day supply. However, that’s still a day lower than the three-day supply we need to have on hand."

Eligible donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in general good health. Donors of all blood types are welcome.
