CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Thursday marked two years since Margaret Spellings took office as the president of the University of North Carolina system.

During an interview with reporters, Spellings said there have been challenges, but also a lot of progress. She said she's "pleased but not satisfied" because, no matter how well things are going, there is always work to do.

When students and faculty first learned Spellings would be president, there were protests. But, two years later, she feels she has quieted her critics.

"I think I really have. These folks are my friends. I don't see anyone around here protesting," she said.

Spellings highlighted what she sees as successes in the last 24 months.

"We've got the best budget in 10 years from the legislature," she said.

The budget includes a commitment to "NC Promise," an initiative to improve access and affordability.

"We are going to come about as close as you can to meeting the ‘as free and practicable’ requirement of our state constitution with $500 per semester tuition at three of our institutions," Spellings said.

Looking ahead, Spellings understands there is much competition for state resources. But she wants to make sure of one thing.

"(I want to ensure) that we get our rightful share of them, because we are a big part of the success of North Carolina," she said. "So, making our case to the legislature will be a big priority for me in the coming year."

Spellings said, two years in, she feels like she's really hitting her stride. She called the UNC system a treasure.

"I can't think of any place I'd rather be," she said.
