SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Two men were wounded Sunday night during a drive-by shooting in Smithfield, police said.

One man was shot in the back and a second man was shot in the abdomen in the 100 block of Heath Avenue at about 10 p.m., police said.

The two men were walking with another man when the group exchanged words with people in a passing car, police said. The car turned around, and someone inside opened fire on the group as the car drove off.

The car was described as a small, dark-colored passenger car with three or four men inside, police said.

The wounded men ran to a nearby house for protection in case the car returned, police said. They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, but their conditions weren't known Monday.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Smithfield Police Department at 919-934-2121 or The Smithfield Tip Line at 919-989-8835.
