SANFORD, N.C. — Two people were sent to the hospital on Thursday after a crash sent a tractor trailer down an embankment and into a pond.

The crash happened around 4:45 p.m. on N.C. Highway 87 in front of the entrance to Carolina Trace in Sanford. Troopers with the State Highway Patrol said a vehicle turned in front of a tractor-trailer. The two vehicles collided, and the tractor trailer ended up in a pond.

Troopers said the driver of the car was at fault. The driver of the tractor-trailer, who was not identified, was airlifted to a nearby hospital. The driver of the car was also sent to a local hospital.

Traffic was backed up for miles on N.C. 87 during rush hour. The area was shut down in both directions before one lane was eventually opened to allow traffic to move again.
