MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Two troopers were involved in separate crashes on Interstate 40 in Wake County late Tuesday night.

The first crash occurred around 9 p.m. near Exit 284 for Airport Boulevard in Morrisville. According to the N.C. State Highway Patrol, a driver rear-ended a trooper who had pulled over.

The driver, who did not have a license and was under the influence of alcohol, was arrested and charged for violating the state's "move over law," which asks drivers to pull into another lane and give officers space when possible. The driver, who was under 21, was also charged with underage drinking.

The trooper was transported to WakeMed with injuries but is expected to be okay.

The second crash occurred around 10 p.m. near Exit 306 for U.S. Highway 70 in Garner and included four cars, including a state trooper. The trooper was not injured or taken to a hospital.

In Knightdale early Wednesday morning, a sheriff's deputy was hit by a car while he was pulled over on Interstate 87 to assist a stranded driver. The deputy's arm was badly injured but he is expected to be okay.
