SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A westbound driver on U.S. 70 Business near the Johnston County Airport was struck by a spare tire, which a witness said had fallen from under the back of a pickup truck.

The loose wheel and tire struck the SUV directly on the driver's side of his windshield.

The impact sent the car out of control into a power pole before flipping over, going airborne and landing on the porch of a nearby home.

The car knocked one support from under the porch, but did not strike the house.

The driver and his wife were both injured and trapped in the front of the car with their 14-year-old daughter in the back seat, apparently uninjured.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is looking for the owner of the loose wheel and tire.
