WENDELL, N.C. — Two people died in a Thursday night crash involving two cars, according to Wendell Fire Chief Brian Staples.

It happened after 10:40 p.m. on Wendell Boulevard near Eagle Rock Road.

Both cars were significantly damaged, and the SUV flipped on its top. The right side of a sedan, the other car involved, was mangled.

On Friday, Wendell police said Annie Marchese, 75, and Hannah Herman, 25, died in the crash.

Police said Marchese was driving an Oldsmobile and traveling east in westbound lane when her vehicle collided with a Nissan Rogue, in which Herman was a passenger.

Another woman who was driving the Rogue was taken to the hospital for her injuries.

So much debris covered the road from the impact of the collision that crews had to use a leaf blower to clean glass out of the street.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The westbound lanes of Wendell Boulevard were closed near Eagle Rock Road until 2:30 a.m.
