Shots fired at sheriff's deputies in Zebulon
ZEBULON, N.C. — Two men have been cited for violating a county ordinance after it was believed they were firing at law enforcement officers on Sunday.

Wake County Sheriff’s Office investigators said two men were firing guns near the Plantation Glen Subdivision in Zebulon on Sunday night. Witnesses told deputies they reported hearing gunshots coming from the wood line near the neighborhood.

At the time, Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker commended deputies for not firing back after he said they approached the men and asked them several times to disengage.

The sheriff's office reports the men voluntarily brought their weapons and met with investigators Monday morning at the Wake County Public Safety Center. After being interviewed, it was determined that the men had recently purchased the weapons at a local gun show and were testing them out on a relative’s property.

Investigators said they were shooting in the direction of the neighborhood, which corresponds to the area in which the deputies responded to initiate their investigation. It was determined the men were not aware of the public safety issues they were creating.

The charge is a misdemeanor offense.
