KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — Eastbound lanes of Interstate 540 are closed at Exit 20, Buffaloe Road, after an overnight crash that involved two Knightdale police SUVs.

Authorities tell WRAL News that the police were responding to a crash on the interstate between Buffaloe Road and Knightdale Boulevard when a third vehicle hit one and it likely hit the other. The first police vehicle was badly damaged and burned. The second police vehicle was also damaged.

Three people were taken to an area hospital after the crash. It was not immediately clear whether any law enforcement officers were hurt.

The crash happened just before 3 a.m., and the North Carolina Department of Transportation estimated lanes would remain closed through about 7 a.m.
