WELDON, N.C. — A man and a woman were killed and a second man was wounded in a Tuesday morning shooting at a Weldon home, police said.

Officers were called to a duplex in the 400 block of Chestnut Street shortly after 1:30 a.m. for a reported shooting and found Levita Romane Webb, 41, of Weldon, and Dexter O’Neal Miles, 52, of Garysburg, dead. The lone survivor, whose name hasn't been released, was airlifted to an area hospital, where he was stabilized.

Weldon Police Chief Chris Davis said investigators are still trying to piece together what happened and don't yet know a motive for the shootings.

"We’re still working on things like that, trying to figure out exactly what happened, why it happened, things of that nature," Davis said.

A woman at the scene told WRAL News someone tried to rob the home and that her father and her cousin were among those shot.

Karon Treakle, operations officer at the nearby First Baptist Church, said she was stunned to see the crime tape when she arrived at the church Tuesday morning.

"We’ve had some things happen down here, but nothing like that," Treakle said.

"We always make sure we provide stuff for [people in the neighborhood]," she added. "Somebody will let us know, will get in touch with us and let us know what they might need. We’ll get everything together, and we’ll provide in any way we can."

Weldon hasn't had a homicide in two years, Davis said.

"This neighborhood is normally not bad at all, so it’s kind of weird that we had something in this area," he said. "It’s been a while since we had something in this area."

The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting police on the case.
