FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The state medical examiner is working to identify two people killed in a single-car wreck overnight in Fayetteville.

North Carolina state troopers said the victims were burned beyond recognition and that it could take weeks to positively identify them.

The wreck happened around 1:15 a.m. when a 2004 Cadillac, traveling at 85 mph northbound on Cedar Creek Road near Mark Simmons Road, ran off the side of the road, hit a retaining wall and burst into flames.

Authorities said it is too soon to determine whether drugs or alcohol might have been a factor in the wreck.
