DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham Police Department identified two people killed Tuesday in a crash in Durham.

Around 1:30 a.m., officers with the Durham Police Department responded to a deadly crash involving only one car, a 2017 Chevy Camaro, at the intersection of East Cornwallis Road and Beechwood Drive.

According to police, Carlos Corona Cortes, 27, and Yessika Carapia-Madrigal, 21, both of Durham, died at the crash scene.

Police said Cortes, the driver, lost control of his car on Cornwallis Road when taking a curve and overcorrected, spinning, crossing oncoming lanes and running off the road.

According to police, the car split a telephone pole in half and hit a large tree.

Cortes and Carapia-Madrigal, his passenger, died on impact. Neither were wearing seatbelts, police said.

Police said speed and alcohol were likely involved.

The crash remains under investigation.
