BOONE, N.C. — A state of emergency remains in effect for several areas in western North Carolina on Thursday after heavy rain from subtropical storm Alberto caused mudslides and flooding in the area, resulting in several deaths.
Two people were killed after a landslide caused a home to collapse in Boone Wednesday around 5 p.m., WCYB News reported.

That landslide led to a gas leak, which caused the home to collapse.

The home was located on Pine Ridge Drive in the Heavenly Mountain Community.

Police have not released the victims' identities.

The Watauga County Sheriff's Office will be conducting the investigation.

Mandatory evacuations were canceled for parts of western North Carolina on Wednesday after rain from Alberto threatened a dam near Asheville.

Early Wednesday morning, officials with the National Weather Service were urging people near Lake Tahoma to preserve their lives by evacuating.

According to officials, a landslide in Lake Tahoma compromised the integrity of a dam near the Catawba River, and residents living below Lake Tahoma were ordered to leave after the dam was inspected by an engineer.

At 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the mandatory evacuations were lifted, and officials deemed the dam safe.

According to WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner, although Alberto is weakening, the western portion of the state will be hit with constant rain for several days, creating soggy grounds and the risk for deadly mudslides.

Gov. Roy Cooper will tour Polk, Rutherford and McDowell counties on Thursday to survey the damage in areas that were hit the hardest.
