Two charged with manslaughter after Aberdeen man's fentanyl overdose

ABERDEEN, N.C. — Two suspects face manslaughter charges after the July overdose death of an Aberdeen man.

Derrick Maurice Smith was found dead on July 31 in his home on Fullers Way. An autopsy report released to the Moore County Sheriff's Office on Dec. 23 showed that Smith died from an overdose of fentanyl and cocaine.

According to Moore County officials, fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine.

On Dec. 27, detectives arrested Howard Eugene Campbell, 67, of Aberdeen. Campbell was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver fentanyl and involuntary manslaughter.

On Dec. 31, detectives arrested Steven Garrick Smith, 39, of Southern Pines. Smith was charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Both suspects were being held in the Moore County Detention Center on a $50,000 secured bond. Court dates were scheduled for Jan. 8.
