FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police on Monday announced the arrests of a man and woman who are accused of operating a scam on Craigslist.

Laprecia Ancrum Lesane and Christopher Michael Dillard, both 29, were arrested in Buford, Ga., on Friday after Fayetteville police received a tip from a citizen there who recognized the suspects from an online posting the department sent out on June 4.

Investigators say Lesane and Dillard advertised on Craigslist for rental apartments that they did not own and took payments from victims. At least seven people reported being defrauded.

A citizen in Buford confirmed the identity of Lesane and Dillard after a Google search produced results showing the pair was wanted in Fayetteville on several fraud related charges. Police then discovered that the suspects would be in a local store to purchase TV sets on Friday afternoon.

"After coordinating with the Gwinnette Sheriff’s office in Buford ... a sting operation was put in place," Fayetteville police said in a news release. "Once the suspects went inside the business, officers converged and arrested the suspects."

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office will extradite the suspects back to North Carolina.
