New York City's WPIX has been running a Yule Log special since 1966, featuring a log merrily crackling away in a fireplace, accompanied by a variety of Christmas songs. The special runs on Christmas Eve and into Christmas day, and was originally conceived to bring the warmth of a fireplace into the homes of New Yorkers...and, of course, to give station employees some time off.
The original footage was filmed at Gracie Mansion, to the detriment of an antique rug that caught fire during the filming -- today's Yule Log was actually filmed about as far away from New York, and Christmas, as you can get, as it was shot in California. Anyone with a television can tune in for a little Yule Log enjoyment, getting all the fun of a fire without the maintenance or dangers.
New York carpenters and other Christmas celebrants may be cozied up in front of their televisions (or fires) tonight to beat the cold, but don't forget to leave out some cookies for Santa before bed!
