Tuesday Wrap: Prison woes, consultant bills and a broken arm
Lawmakers returned to Raleigh on Tuesday and received a distressing report about the state of North Carolina's prisons.
Posted — UpdatedNorth Carolina prison staffers report an average of two assaults a day, more than one-fifth of correctional officer jobs are vacant and the state is spending $60 million a year in overtime to help staff facilities, the state's new prisons commissioner told a Senate committee. Lawmakers are looking at pay increases and earlier retirements to attract more people to the job.
Some lawmakers are criticizing the Department of Transportation for paying a consultant $970,000 for an eight-page report on the agency's cash-flow problems that basically reiterated what officials have known for months: a string of natural disasters, legal settlements tied to a since-repealed state law for future highway corridors have drained DOT's reserves.
This week will be big for redistricting efforts, as a House committee will take up three reform bills on Thursday, the same day a state court holds a hearing into a lawsuit challenging the congressional district map drawn in 2016.
Finally, here's wishing a speedy recovery to State Treasurer Dale Folwell, who literally ended his time as a motocross racer with a bang by breaking his arm.
