RALEIGH, N.C. — Few lawmakers were present Tuesday – many in masks – when the House and the Senate convened for what will likely be a brief session dedicated to coronavirus relief.

How brief will depend on how quickly the two chambers can agree on the size of the relief package and how exactly to allocate the money. A Senate plan rolled out Tuesday evening differs in a number of ways from a package of bills House committees have been working on for weeks.

The state has received $3.5 billion in federal aid money so far, and some lawmakers want to hold back on releasing some of the money to see what issues need to be addressed in the coming months. They're also worried about how much of a budget hole the state will be in because of lower revenue.

Once an agreement is reached, never-before-seen votes, with some lawmakers allowed to cast votes remotely because the virus poses a higher risk to them, will take place.
