Tuesday Wrap: Budget frustrations building

After the Senate approved its budget last week, lawmakers have been slow to return to action.

RALEIGH, N.C. — After the Senate approved its budget last week, lawmakers have been slow to return to action.

The House officially rejected the Senate's plan, and already rumors are swirling through the General Assembly that frustrations are building over the wide differences between the two chambers over 2019-20 spending.

One of the few things done at the legislature Tuesday was the House Transportation committee approving a bill designed to improve safety for people who use ride-share services like Uber or Lyft.

Outside the General Assembly, Gov. Roy Cooper weighed in on various issues after the monthly Council of State meeting, including the state budget, tax cuts, the simmering dispute between Vidant Health and the UNC Board of Governors – and between Vidant and the Senate – and legislation dealing with utility rates.

Also, the reconstituted State Ethics Commission named an interim director – twice because of a mix-up among board members over their conference call.
