RALEIGH, N.C. — With all eyes on powerful Hurricane Matthew, which made landfall in Haiti early Tuesday, a new tropical system has formed in the Atlantic Ocean.

Nicole earned its name at 11 a.m. Tuesday with sustained winds of about 50 mph.

The storm is about 500 miles northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and it is expected to move to the north in the coming days, away from the U.S. mainland, WRAL meteorologist Nate Johnson said.

The storm was moving northwest at about 8 mph at 11 a.m.

"Nicole won't have any impact on the United States in the next week," Johnson said.

The storm could impact Bermuda in the coming days before turning back to the south.
