RALEIGH, N.C. — A missing South Carolina man was found safe in Johnston County Saturday afternoon.

Richard A. Barron, 75, of Sumter, S.C., became the subject of a Silver Alert in North Carolina after authorities tracked his cell phone to Raleigh and along Interstate 95 in Wilson.

Two North Carolina state troopers found Barron stranded along the side of I-95 in Johnston County. He had run out of gas trying to get home, troopers said.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
