WENDELL, N.C. — A man died early Friday morning near Wendell after he was hit by his own car in a series of crashes, authorities said.

Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol were called around 1:30 a.m. to two crashes on U.S. Route 64 near Wendell Boulevard. Troopers said there were three vehicles involved in two crashes.

The first crash involved two cars, troopers said. One of the cars was disabled, so three people got out and tried to push it out of the travel lane of the highway. The second vehicle was moved onto the shoulder.

The driver of a third vehicle traveling down the highway saw the car in the right shoulder and moved over into the left lane but didn't see the first car there. The driver crashed into the car, which pushed it into Daniel George Fisher, 24.

Fisher was taken to WakeMed where he died.

A man and woman who were involved in the first crash left the scene after Fisher was hit. Troopers are searching for those people.
