Suspect in Wilson County trooper shooting charged with attempted murder, bond set to $5M

GREENVILLE, N.C. — The suspect in the shooting of a State Highway Patrol trooper in Wilson County has been charged with attempted murder, and his bond has been set to $5 million.

John David Jones, 36, was arrested Monday. The attempted first-degree murder charge upgrades his previous charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and assault on a law enforcement officer.

The trooper shot, Daniel Harrell was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Harrell was shot in the face Monday evening and rushed for medical treatment to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Harrell's father and grandfather were also law enforcement officers, authorities have said. The younger Harrell has been on the force for five years.

Jones was the subject of a massive hours-long manhunt Monday night after the shooting.

Two other men are facing charges in connection with the incident, which occurred at 5:15 p.m. when Harrell tried to pull a vehicle over on Haynes Road, southeast of Elm City.

William Allen Boswell, 40, of Elm City, and Bryan Jeffrey Mullins, 25, of Bailey, are charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle. They are currently in the Wilson County Detention Center under $15,000 secure bonds.
