A State Highway Patrol trooper kicked down the door of a burning house to rescue three dogs inside.

A passing Wake County trooper saw the fire on Powhatan Road, in Clayton, on Monday afternoon, according to officials.

The trooper stopped and asked a man standing in the yard if he had called 911. Officials said the man was on the phone with 911.

Then, the trooper heard dogs barking inside the house. Officials said the trooper ran to the back door and kicked it in.

The trooper was able to rescue 2 of the 3 dogs inside. Officials said the first arriving fire unit rescued the third dog inside the home.

The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

No one was injured in the fire but the home was heavily damaged.

The Red Cross is helping the two adults and small child who lived in the home.
