DURHAM, N.C. — Cities across the country -- and right here in North Carolina -- are bracing for protests as a verdict is reached in Derek Chauvin's trial.
Video from Minneapolis shows demonstrations that started Monday before deliberations even began, and authorities said they are preparing for the possibility of intense reaction regardless of the trial's outcome.

Durham Mayor Steve Schewel said the city is watching the verdict closely and encouraging people to express their right to protest but they’re prepared to act quickly if demonstrations turn destructive.

"As you know, our style of policing here in Durham is to support people's First Amendment right to assemble," Schewel said. "But if there are a lot of people coming to do damage in Durham, our police officers will be ready for that as well."

Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker is taking action too, saying it isn't a bad idea for Raleigh downtown businesses to board up out of caution. Some storefronts in the warehouse district, including Urban Outfitters, were damaged over the weekend when protesters took to the streets to protest the shooting of Daunte Wright.
