RALEIGH, N.C. — With two teams in the NCAA Basketball Tournament's Final Four, a 1st place Metropolitan Division title for the Carolina Hurricanes and the Durham Bulls clinching the 2021 Triple-A National Champions title, Triangle teams are in action.

Experts and business owners said wins come with a trickle-down effect: increased sales and increased tax revenue.

Decked out in a "Wolfpack wardrobe," Holly Currie prefers cheering on N.C. State’s women’s basketball team at local sports bars.

"What a time to be alive as a collegiate fan in the Triangle," said Currie. "It makes it a lot more fun than watching on your couch."

Other fans look on to the historic Final Four matchup between Duke and UNC men’s basketball teams.

They’re going out of their way to root for their home team, which means more revenue for Sammy's Tap & Grill owner David Harris.

"When State is doing well and plays Carolina it’s definitely a big crowd. Sales are up probably 30%," said Harris "When Carolina plays Duke we’re probably up 40%. That’s a big game."

Dennis Edwards with the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau told WRAL News the exposure from the Triangle’s collegiate and professional sports teams affects the local economy.

"When we have our local teams winning, it puts us in a better position. I think from a competitive standpoint to help books some of these other events that are related to that particular sport," said Edwards. "And hopefully, book some additional events here in the market."

Tax collection from the tourism industry is in the midst of a pretty significant upward trend in Wake County.

The latest industry report shows the county made more than $22 million from hotel lodging in 2021, up from $14 million in 2020.

Taxes from prepared food and beverages in 2021 brought in $34 million, up from $25 million the previous year.

County leaders and locals anticipate more economic growth if collegiate and pro teams from the 919 keep up with their winning trajectory.

"If the teams are winning then it’s good for the restaurants all the way down to the servers," said Currie. "Everyone benefits, definitely."
