RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Department of Transportation crews have been pretreating highways and main roads for several days, but they’re not the only ones trying to stay one step ahead of the storm.

A steady stream of drivers were gassing up Saturday, with just hours to go until the first snow of the season arrives.

Rising snow total predictions were causing some concern for John Rankin, who was 140 miles from his Gaston County home Saturday afternoon.

“We’re on our way to a wedding and we are not sure if we should stay in a hotel tonight or just move on before the snow arrives,” he said. "We are worried about the ice. My wife doesn't like to drive with ice."

Luzimar Hernandez said she spent the day stocking up on essentials and is prepared to spend Sunday at home.

“Tomorrow, we’re planning to take the kids out and play in the snow and have some fun,” she said.

At a Publix in Cary, Natalie Lubowicz stocked up on some groceries as meteorologists predicted three inches of snow near her Morrisville home. She is holding out hope for something different.

"I hope none. I hate snow. I'm originally from Ohio, so I moved here to get away from the snow," she said.

Still, Hernandez and others are worried about getting around on Monday. Until then, John Dingle said he’s ready to enjoy whatever Mother Nature delivers.

“I just like seeing it. I’m originally from down further south, so I was used to ice, so snow is great for me,” he said.

Gov. Roy Cooper on Saturday has already warned residents to stay off the roads Saturday night and Sunday and Duke Energy said more than 500,000 power outages are possible as a result of the storm.
