DURHAM, N.C. — A 17-week old puppy spent New Year's Eve in a local veterinary hospital after falling onto a knitting needle and piercing her heart.

According to officials at the Triangle Veterinary Referral Hospital in Durham, Tutti, a white, black and brown Papillon, fell onto the needle New Year's Eve after the needle fell off a table in her home.

The needle, which was longer than an ink pen, entered the dog's chest and pierced her heart.

Doctors at the hospital put Tutti to sleep and removed the needle, and she was kept for one night to make sure she wouldn't bleed.

Tutti went home New Year's Day, and her owners told hospital officials that she is resting comfortably and making progress in her recovery.
