ZEBULON, N.C. — It was a bright, sunny day with calm winds when a tree fell onto a vehicle driving down N.C. Highway 96 around 12:40 p.m. Sunday, injuring the woman inside.

The woman, who was driving a small SUV, apparently swerved to avoid being struck, but the car's passenger compartment was nearly crushed by the large tree – pinning the driver inside.

Witnesses said the huge oak tree was at least 30 feet off the roadway and brought down at least one other smaller tree as it crashed to the ground.

A trooper at the scene said that the freak accident was "unavoidable."

The victim, who is from Clayton and was the car's only occupant, was transported to WakeMed with "very serious injuries," according to officials.

The state Department of Transportation was called to help clean up the downed tree, while State Highway Patrol investigated the Johnston County accident.
