Travelers concerned over lack of security cameras in RDU parking garage

Someone attempted to break into a car at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Tuesday in a parking garage that has no security cameras.

A parking garage at the airport was closed off for hours Tuesday as police searched the multi-level structure.

"I have been flying from this airport for almost four years," said traveler Alejandra MacDonnell. She was unaware of the security scare and did not know that there were no cameras in the airport's parking deck.

Even though WRAL News question RDU officials on this security concern before, they have not installed cameras.

In June, 5 On Your Side reached out to a security expert who said individual airports decide where coverage is needed.

Art Kosatka, an airport security, planning and design consultant has worked with RDU International.

He shared some of the questions airports typically consider when deciding to install camreas: "What’s the threat? Have we had any terrorist threats lately? Has there been a lot of criminal activity? What kind of criminal activity and where is it in the parking garages or is it in the terminal building against the crowds of mingling people?"

WRAL News reached out again to Transportation Security Administration who said that security descions in the parking garages are up to the airport.

A spokesperson with RDU said that, "we implement a layered security approach using plans, policies, people and technology, some of which are highly visible and some intentionally unseen."

Airport officials said they could not discuss security plans with the media. They also could not comment on the reported attempted carjacking because officials are still investigating.
