Raleigh, N.C. — The North Carolina Board of Transportation has officially handed over its power to approve construction projects to Department of Transportation Secretary Gene Conti.
Last month, Gov. Bev Perdue issued an executive order giving the state transportation secretary sole authority to approve road construction projects and taking that authority from the board.
Conti will now decide on more than $18 million worth of contracts in Alamance, Henderson, Lenoir, Lincoln, McDowell, Orange, Randolph and Surry counties.
A permanent protocol for larger projects is still being developed.
