Training for Baby: Lost weekend

The bonus of losing weight to have a healthy pregnancy is that before you get pregnant, you get to enjoy being skinny - something I never really experienced before. It also comes with the fear that you are going to put the weight back on.

When I started out on this weight loss journey, I had a date circled on my calendar – Aug. 27 – my brother-in-law’s wedding. I wanted to look nice for it since most of the family there would be seeing me for the first time since my wedding three years ago.

Early last year, I joked to my husband that we needed to get pregnant before his brother’s wedding so I had an excuse to be overweight. Then, I realized that losing weight was going to be a big part of our journey to start a family.

The wedding was this past weekend and we had a blast. It gave me a chance to cut loose for the first time since I started eating right and working out.

It was great to not count calories for the night, but when I woke up Sunday morning I had “food guilt.” I knew I consumed some rich wedding cake and a few cocktails that definitely weren’t healthy.

Do you ever experience remorse after eating something bad for you or not exercising?

I sometimes get a little nervous that I will fall out of my healthy habits in lieu of the sweet allure of fried food and sweets that provided me comfort in the past. It might seem silly, but it was so easy for me to put on the weight, I am afraid it will sneak up on me again.

Baby weight is different, but it still scares me a little. I think it is all about changing your attitude toward your body.

I spent the past 10 months focused on losing weight, now I have to learn to maintain where I am, and eventually grow along with a baby. It is a constant adjustment that I look forward to learning how to do.
