APEX, N.C. — Construction of the Western Wake Freeway will cause detours for drivers in southwest Apex in the coming months. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority is building a bypass of about 12 miles from Interstate 540 in Research Triangle Park to connect with N.C. Highway 55 near Holly Springs.

Work on the route will close South Salem Street (Old U.S. Highway 1) between Kelly Road and Apex Barbecue Road for 10 months beginning on Wednesday.

The Western Wake Freeway makes up the bulk of the Triangle Expressway project, a toll road which will connect Durham County at N.C. 147 south to Holly Springs. This leg of the project is scheduled to be complete in 2012.

Traffic in Apex will be re-routed while South Salem Street is closed.
