RALEIGH, N.C. — On Wednesday night, the North Carolina Department of Transportation will close both lanes of Interstate 40 West at the N.C. 54 interchange.

DOT will also close the on-ramp from N.C. 54 North to I-40 West to begin installation of two conveyer belt systems at the N.C. 54 interchange that will transport stone and asphalt to the median area of I-40.

The contractor estimates use of the conveyer belt will eliminate 237 lane closures and nearly 12,000 truckload trips that otherwise would have been needed to haul the materials from the I-40 travel lanes, DOT officials said.

Beginning at 9 p.m. Wednesday, motorists traveling north on N.C. 54 needing to access I-40 West will use the southbound on ramp to I-40 West until midnight. Police officers will be present at the intersection to direct traffic through the interchange areas.

Beginning at midnight, I-40 West motorists will take Exit 290 for N.C. 54, cross over N.C. 54 and proceed back down the on ramp onto I-40 West. Both lanes of I-40 West will reopen at 5 a.m. on Thursday.
