— The bridge on Burlington Mills Road that crosses Smith Creek will be closed until Saturday while officials perform emergency repairs, the N.C. Department of Transportation said Wednesday.

During a routine bridge inspection on Wednesday, inspectors found that a bridge support needed to be replaced. The bridge was closed Wednesday. Repairs will begin Thursday morning and are expected to be completed by 8 p.m. Saturday.

The following detours are available:

  • Motorists on Burlington Mills Road traveling west to U.S. 1, should take Ligon Mill Road to U.S. 401 to Capital Boulevard
  • Motorists on Capital Boulevard North should take U.S. 1A to Ligon Mill to Burlington Mills Road.
  • Motorists on Capital Boulevard South should take Perry Creek Road to U.S. 401 to Ligon Mill Road to Burlington Mills Road.

DOT officials said a project to replace the bridge is under way. The new bridge, which is being built parallel to the existing bridge, is expected to be completed by May 2009.
