Wake County bridge closed for emergency repairs

The bridge on Burlington Mills Road that crosses Smith Creek will be closed until Saturday while officials perform emergency repairs, the N.C. Department of Transportation said Wednesday.

WAKE FOREST, N.C. — The bridge on Burlington Mills Road that crosses Smith Creek will be closed until Saturday while officials perform emergency repairs, the N.C. Department of Transportation said Wednesday.

During a routine bridge inspection on Wednesday, inspectors found that a bridge support needed to be replaced. The bridge was closed Wednesday. Repairs will begin Thursday morning and are expected to be completed by 8 p.m. Saturday.

The following detours are available:

  • Motorists on Burlington Mills Road traveling west to U.S. 1, should take Ligon Mill Road to U.S. 401 to Capital Boulevard
  • Motorists on Capital Boulevard North should take U.S. 1A to Ligon Mill to Burlington Mills Road.
  • Motorists on Capital Boulevard South should take Perry Creek Road to U.S. 401 to Ligon Mill Road to Burlington Mills Road.

DOT officials said a project to replace the bridge is under way. The new bridge, which is being built parallel to the existing bridge, is expected to be completed by May 2009.
