Raleigh, N.C. — A car fire shut down Interstate 40 westbound through Raleigh Friday afternoon, causing backups for miles and prompting the North Carolina Department of Transportation to recommend a 16-mile detour.
The fire happened at about 6:30 p.m. near Exit 299, Hammond Road. All lanes were closed for almost an hour, and traffic was flowing smoothly again by 8:30 p.m.
Troopers said no one was seriously injured.
