Traffic Stop Nets 4 Armed Robbery Suspects

— Orange County sheriff's deputies Wednesday arrested four men from Chapel Hill and Carrboro suspected in an armed robbery at an apartment complex on University Drive in Durham.

Deputies stopped a dark blue car for a traffic violations near Efland around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. Deputies said they found items belonging to the robbery victim inside the car.

Investigators charged Lavarus Deleon Atwater, 16, of Jones Ferry Road, Chapel Hill; Nicholas Nickerson, 24, of Hill Street, Carrboro; Dreycell Markees Johnson, 17, of Ford Road, Chapel Hill; and George Gattis Jr., 17, of Hill Street, Carrboro, with robbery with a dangerous weapon, simple assault and discharging a firearm within the city limits.

A 33-year-old man told police that two men pointed a gun at him as he was getting out of his car in the 4600 block of University Drive. The victim struggled with the robbers and was hit in the face, police said.

The robbers fired two shots in the as they fled in a dark blue car, with at least one other person inside.

They stole the victim's wallet, keys and DVD player.

Police said further charges are pending.
