RALEIGH, N.C. — A man died Wednesday morning when he was hit by multiple cars while walking on Interstate 440 near the Lake Boone Trail exit.

All westbound lanes of I-440 were closed between Exit 5 for Lake Boone Trail and Wade Avenue for nearly five hours. The closure started sometime before 4 a.m. At 6 a.m., Sky 5 video showed traffic backed up two miles.

At 8 a.m., traffic was backed up at least five miles, past Wake Forest Road. The road reopened around 9 a.m., but heavy delays persisted in the westbound lanes as tow trucks worked to remove cars from the scene.

The drivers who hit the man stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, authorities said. The specific circumstances surrounding the crashes were not immediately available on Wednesday.

WRAL is working to learn more.
