HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Interstate 85 south of Hillsborough could be closed until 11:30 a.m. Wednesday after a crash involving a tractor trailer.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred in the northbound lanes around 3:50 a.m. when a tractor trailer ran off the right side of the road and hit a guardrail near Exit 163 for Interstate 40 East.

The trailer detached from cab and went down an embankment, officials said. It was hauling comforters and blankets, which spilled out of the truck.

Officials said the driver was not injured.

Towing companies were still at the scene at 9 a.m. cleaning debris from the roadway and securing the truck. The entire southbound direction of I-85 could be closed until 11:30 a.m., officials estimated.

It is not clear why the driver lost control, and no charges have been filed.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area.

As a detour, motorists can take Exit 163 and follow I-40 to Exit 261 for Old N.C. Highway 86. Turn left and follow N.C. 86 to re-access I-85 at Exit 164.
