GODWIN, N.C. — A crash involving a tractor-trailer and spilled live fish on Tuesday closed northbound lanes on Interstate 95 in Cumberland County.

The crash occurred before 5:45 a.m. near Exit 61 for Wade-Stedman Road, near Godwin and north of Fayetteville.

The truck was carrying thousands of pounds of live fish, which spilled onto the roadway when the truck overturned. At 8 a.m., two lanes had reopened, but heavy delays remained in the area, and WRAL's Brett Knese said traffic was backed up for miles.

The driver was not injured. Crews at the scene said someone cut the driver off, and when he tried to get out of the way, he overcorrected.

The entire road may not reopen until 9 a.m. while crews work to clear the fish from the roadway, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Drivers on I-95 N should avoid the area if possible or use the following detour:

  • Take Exit 61 for Wade-Stedman Road
  • Turn left on Wade-Stedman Road
  • Turn right on U.S. Highway 301 N
  • Turn right on N.C. Highway 82 E
  • Turn left to return to I-95 N
