Cary flushes water lines after residents report murky tap water
After dozens of west Cary residents reported murky tap water on Wednesday, town crews went hydrant by hydrant on Thursday to flush the system to clear up the problem.
Posted — UpdatedWorkers let the water flow until samples showed no discoloration.
That wasn't the case for Michelle Brothers and other Cary residents earlier in the week.
About 200 people called town offices to complain that their water looked dark – one compared it to cardboard – and complain it had stained clothes in the washer. Some residents posted photos to Cary's Twitter page of bathtubs and sinks filled with discolored water.
Even though the water may have looked concerning Cary Utilities Director Jamie Revels said it was "completely safe" to drink.
Revels said sediment, like naturally occurring iron deposits, was kicked up during work on the water system this week.
"We have been doing some work on our water distribution system to bring on some new infrastructure," he said, adding that flushing the system produced "a dramatic improvement."
Revels said major work on the water system is complete, so he doesn't expect any more discoloration.
But anyone whose water still doesn't look right should run the tap for about five minutes or so. If that does not work, Cary officials said residents could call the town's water/sewer non-emergency line at 919-469-4012, and a technician would go to the affected home to get it cleared up.
