I was shopping the Divine Children's Show sale this morning when I noticed the shelves of Tookie's Toys were pretty bare.
Turns out the five-year-old store is closing the doors to the North Raleigh store this Saturday. The original Tookie's Toys in Cameron Village, which opened nine years ago, will remain open.

Store owner Katherine Hodges said the store's lease was up at the end of last year and it was time to reevaluate the business.

"It is not something that we did not spend many many hours trying to determine," Hodges said.

A lot has changed for Falls Village in the last few years with the exodus of several businesses including the Fresh Market, Dilly Dally, Great Outdoor Provision Company and others. Several other boutiques also moved to North Hills when it reopened after the major expansion and renovation there a couple of years ago.

"Last year was certainly not our best year there," Hodges told me.

Right now, what's left in the store is 50 percent off, though it's getting hit pretty hard with the very popular consignment sale next door, which runs through Thursday afternoon. Hodges said items may get even cheaper the last two days that the store is open.
