RALEIGH, N.C. — December is the busiest time at post offices, and lines have been long this week as deadlines approach for mail to arrive by Christmas.

Thursday is the last day to have packages arrive by Christmas when paying for ground shipping via the U.S. Postal Service. Packages must by shipped as express starting Friday to arrive by Christmas.

Packages have been taking over the mail room at the New Bern Avenue post office in Raleigh.

The manager said more than 40,000 packages arrived on Monday morning.

Postal workers have come in two hours early this week to make sure all holiday cards and packages are being delivered.

One customer said she was hoping to beat the rush.

“I think that’s why a lot of people are trying to get here early, hoping to get their stuff out to its final destination,” Kenecia Jenkins said. “But there’s always no guarantee.”

The deadline for express shipments arriving by Christmas is Saturday.

Some post offices are closed on weekends. It might be necessary to travel outside of your neighborhood to find an open one.
