Here's what's happening at the General Assembly on Tuesday, March 12.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Here's what's happening at the General Assembly on Tuesday, March 12:
  • The House and Senate budget committees continue meeting in joint sessions at 8:30 and 9 a.m.
  • The Senate Elections Committee meets at 10 a.m. and will take up a bill to exempt the two special congressional elections from the state's new voter ID requirement.
  • The House Transportation Committee will debate restricting the use of cellphones while driving to hands-free devices and repealing the Map Act, which limits development of property in future highway corridors, at its 10 a.m. meeting.
  • The House Health Committee also meets at 10 a.m. and will consider a pilot program in Cumberland County to provide veterans with health care.
  • The Senate Judiciary Committee will consider legislation to increase the penalty for breaking into a pharmacy at its 11 a.m. meeting.
  • The House Community College Education Committee will take up a scholarship program for high-achieving students at its 11 a.m. meeting.
  • The House K-12 Education Committee meets at 1 p.m. and will discuss requiring students pass an arts education course before graduation and allowing school districts in 22 counties to experiment with different school calendars.
  • The House has no scheduled floor votes when it convenes at 4:45 p.m. The Senate will take up at least three items, including a resolution to honor the late Congressman Walter Jones.
