RALEIGH, N.C. — Here's what's happening at the General Assembly on Tuesday, June 5:
  • Guns-rights advocates Grass Roots North Carolina and some Republican House lawmakers are backing a bill at an 11 a.m. news conference that would allow armed "volunteers" to carry guns in schools. Legislative leaders have already declared that idea dead on arrival, however. WRAL.com plans to carry the news conference live.
  • The Senate Finance Committee takes up the Build NC Bond Act at its 1 p.m. meeting. The measure would allow the state treasurer to issue $3 billion in "special indebtedness" – i.e., without voter approval – for road and infrastructure projects. WRAL.com plans to carry the committee hearing live.
  • The Senate Agriculture and Environment Committee takes up the annual Farm Act during a 9 a.m. meeting.
  • The Senate Judiciary Committee looks at creating a system to track rape kits in law enforcement agencies statewide at 11 a.m.
  • The House Universities Education Committee hears about a new STEM teaching program at 1 p.m., while the House K-12 Education Committee takes up a proposal to put the U.S. and North Carolina mottos in public schools at 2 p.m.
  • The full House will take its final votes on redrawing judicial districts in Wake County and some other counties across the state.
  • The Senate hasn't yet posted its floor calendar.
